How I got inspired to broaden my perspective on yoga?

  • As a child (4 or so) I got breathing exercises. Our family doctor had recommended a breathing coach because I suffered a lot as I couldn’t breathe well because of Asthma. Because of this Asthma my breath was mainly to the chest and shallow.
  • In 2011 I did an Ashtanga weekend workshop with Dr. Paul Dallaghan. He is the owner of Samahita Retreat Centre on Koh Samui and was one of the few travelling Ashtanga teachers that visited the Netherlands in that time. Besides Ashtanga he told me about his Pranayama studies with Pranayama Master Dr. O.P. Tiwari. I became very interested. Until 2017 it was only possible to learn the ‘secrets’ of the authentic Pranayama of Kaivalyadhama on a one-on-one basis.
  • In 2014 I learned the Ashtanga Pranayama. These are quit intense Pranayama practices with both internal as well as external breath retentions. I was already doing a daily Ashtanga practice for many years. I added this 35 minutes Pranayama practice to my daily practices until 2021.
  • In 2021 my current Pranayama teacher Sudhirji Tiwari came to teach a Pranayama workshop for Delight Yoga, where I worked as a teacher. A few months after the workshop Delight was going to start the first year of the PTT with Sudhir Tiwari.

  • At that moment my thought was how can I further develop my yoga path?

  • It was time to broaden my perspective on yoga. This was the perfect opportunity. So, I registered to join the PTT with Sudhirji in Amsterdam.
  • After finishing the first year of the PTT there was an opportunity to start the remaining two years of the study. This time in India at the Yoga Institute of Kaivalyadhama. I decided to do these intensive studies. Meaning in following traveling six times to India for almost two weeks an each time.
  • In February 2025 I completed the full 1,500 hours Pranayama studies and became certified to teach Pranayama in the lineage of Kaivalyadhama. Together with the certification came the accreditation to teach the first year of the PTT.
  • As a conclusion I would like to say that the study of the Pranayama became the gateway to understand what the Yoga path really is. Understanding yoga is experiential practice. Yoga should not merely be practiced from books. The guidance by a teacher is required. Not only poses practice but also the next steps in the 8-fold path of Patanjali. That is the way to really experience the effects of yoga: experiential by consistent practice. In accordance with the statement of Pattabhi Jois: ‘Practice, practice and all is coming’. And here we have the link between my Ashtanga asana practice for years and the value of the PTT that cleared the path to a real meditative yoga practice.
